Setting up a new podcast is easy with Hipcast. Posting to the podcast is even easier, and we syndicate for you to several popular podcast directories, including the Hipcast Podcast Directory.
To create a podcast feed, follow the steps below. The audio or video you post will exist in the feed, not on a web site or blog in the traditional manner.
Step 1: Select the "Podcast" tab in your account and "New Podcast."
Step 2: Fill in the Name and Description
The name of your podcast is what you would like to call your podcast and what your users will be looking for in podcast directories and on iTunes.
Step 3: Choose your optional Album Art
If you have an art image you would like to use for your Album Art that will appear on your syndicated podcast, you can upload it to your feed in this step. Click on Choose your File and navigate to the saved file on your computer. The Album art may be from 170x170 to 1400x1400 pixels square, and should be a JPEG or GIF file only. All other file types will not work.
For this example, I chose a 100x100 pixel .jpg file, but you can choose one up to 1400x1400 pixels square. iTunes has recently changed their preferences for album art, you are not required to have the large 1400x1400 pixel album art. Podcasts which are to be featured in the iTunes Store are required to have the larger 1400x1400 pixel album art, it is still optional for all others.
If you choose not to upload an image, the default Hipcast icon will be displayed in place of one you upload.
Step 4: Misc Information
If you would like your podcast listeners to see the url for your website in the podcast information, list it here. Do not place your website url in the podcast redirect below, as that will disable the podcast feed.
You can also list copyright information for the your podcast, and list an email address for listeners to be able to contact you. Select the Max# of episodes to be shown on the podcast feed. The default setting is 25, any updates after the 25th episode will not be listed.
Step 5: Media RSS and Syndication
If you would like to syndicate your podcast, here is where you'll make the selections to do that. Some services require that the Media RSS extensions be activated such as Brightcove, blip.tv, Blinkx, Bebo Open Media Platform, Cooliris, deviantArt, FriendFeed, Gmail, Kaltura, NewsTex, PicasaAPI, SmugMug, thePlatform, Wikipedia and Yahoo! Search. If you are syndicating your podcast selecting Yes here is recommended.
You can keep your podcast private and just publish it on your own webpage if you chose, but if you are looking for a wider audience, we can automatically syndicate your podcast. Chose "Yes, Syndicate my podcast!!" if you would like this option. We will then automatically submit the feed to the most current feeds being used by PingOMatic. To check and see where Pingomatic is syndicating, check their website, as they are constantly updating and keeping the list current. PingOMatic
Step 6: Podcast Redirection
If you wish to redirect your RSS feed through a service such as Feedburner to track your podcasting stats, place the redirect url here. Adding any other type of web redirect may disable your podcast feed, so use this with caution. For instance, if you wish to direct your listeners to your webpage after listening to your podcast, place your url in the field above in "Misc Information", "Website URL".
Click on "Save Changes Now". Congratulations, you have set up your Podcast feed! If you need to make changes to any of the information click on the "Edit Podcast" tab.
Now that you have a podcast feed set up, you will be able to add posts, and then submit the feed to syndicated podcast directories and iTunes.
Thank you to everyone who let us know about iTunes' updated requirements. Hipcast already supports Byte Range Requests and you will not need to change anything on your setup to keep your podcast on iTunes. We will support the new image sizes, but they are not required by iTunes for your podcast to keep working, and you don't need to upload a new image. iTunes only requires the larger image if you are featuring your podcast in the iTunes store.
We are working on several updates including support for the larger image sizes in iTunes, coming soon.
You can now give your users a link to your podcast page in our Podcast Directory. All of your podcast episodes are also available on the page so your listeners have instant access to all of your episodes.
Here's how to send your users the link.
Step 1: Log in to your Hipcast account, and Click on Podcasts. Click on the Title of the Podcast you want to share.
Step 2: Copy and Paste the link for your Podcast Page, and share with your listeners.
When your listeners click on the link, they will go to your Podcast Page for that episode. All your episodes for that podcast feed are available for your listeners on that page.
We've set up a new way to deliver your podcast episodes to your subscribers and potential fans without depending on iTunes or podcast directories.
How to set up your podcast page:
The first thing you need to do if you want to have control over your podcast comments section is link your Facebook account with us. You can do that in the "My Account" tab depicted to the left.First of all, if you don't have a Facebook account, I strongly recommend you create one since Facebook is an excellent asset for building a following. Also, you will not be able to moderate your comments if you don't have a Facebook page.
Navigate to the section labeled "Facebook Account" and click the "Link Facebook Account" button depicted below. This will take you to a secure Facebook page that asks permission for us to access your account information for our application. If this was successful, you will see your Facebook User ID above the button. You now have moderation privileges for your podcast comments section!
Now that your comments section is set up you can go to your "Podcasts" section depicted left. This will bring up a list of the podcasts you've made.
Select the podcast that you want to make a podcast page for and navigate to the "Podcast Page (BETA)" tab depicted below.
You will see a link to the first and last podcast episode on this page. We didn't include a link to all your podcast episodes because some of your podcasts number in the thousands. You can, however, navigate to any of those individual episode pages through your podcast page, so check it out!
If you ever want to remove the comments section from your podcast, you can click the radio button at the bottom of the page.
We've fully optimized the URLs for your individual podcast episode pages for posting to Facebook, so go out there and post your audio and video on Facebook! Also, feel free to post your podcast to our Facebook page!
